Animal Care Sanctuary to Take Over Day-to-Day Operations of the Facility

Philadelphia, Pa. (Aug. 3, 2011)- The Pennsylvania SPCA  has announced that the Wellsboro animal shelter will  resume operations  under the leadership of a local group,  announced Pennsylvania SPCA CEO Susan Cosby.  The shelter, which ceased operations in April, will be reopened and operated by the Animal Care Sanctuary based out of East Smithfield, Bradford County, PA.

In response to a challenging economic climate in the state, The Pennsylvania SPCA, a non-profit organization headquartered in Philadelphia, ceased operations the Wellsboro facility, the smallest shelter in its network, with the intention of identifying a local group to eventually reopen the facility.   “We have found  that transitioning some of our rural shelters to local management teams is a successful model for the long-term financial sustainability of the facility, “ said Cosby.  “We have met with the representatives of the Animal Care Sanctuary, and we believe that our similar missions make them a good partner to reopen the Wellsboro Shelter.  This is great news for the community.”

“Animal Care Sanctuary is excited and confident about the opportunity to operate the Wellsboro Shelter,” said Joan Smith-Reece, executive director. “Animal Care Sanctuary will soon celebrate its 50th year of operation, and we have a wealth of experience that will allow us to embrace the entire Tioga County Area and meet their needs with regard to animal welfare.”

“We have a strong team of employees and volunteers and Board of Directors, financial stability, solid marketing, fundraising and non-profit experience that all are assets needed to manage a strong animal organization,” said Smith-Reece.  “It will be imperative for us to work collaboratively with other rescue groups, organizations and the community as a whole to advocate for the animals that rely on us to care for them medically, behaviorally, and with an excellent physical facility that the community can take pride in supporting.”

Since the closing of the shelter in April, the Pennsylvania SPCA has provided and will continue to provide Humane Law Enforcement in Tioga and other central and northern tier counties in Pennsylvania.

Under the agreement, the Pennsylvania SPCA will retain ownership of the building and lease it the Animal Care Sanctuary for $1.  Animal Care Sanctuary will announce further details in regard to an opening date in the near future.
