Project Home: Surrender Prevention Program

Animal Care Sanctuary, as a no-kill shelter, gets dozens of requests daily to help animals in our community that need rescuing, for a multitude of reasons. We want to help as many animals as possible, but please understand that as a no-kill shelter, we can only take as many animals as we have capacity to care for and room to house. For this reason, we schedule our intakes (animals that are coming in) based on when we have space to accept new animals, and are not always able to accept new intakes immediately. This does not mean that we don’t have resources available to try to help you and your animal until we can fit you in! Our Project Home program provides many resources for the community:

Community Food Pantry

If you’ve recently come under financial strain and want to keep your beloved pet in your home, but can’t afford dog or cat food and cat litter, we can help! Our supporters in the community regularly provide donations of cat and dog food and litter that we make available to those in the community that are struggling. Please stop by our East Smithfield or Wellsboro offices if you need help caring for your animals!

Get Your Pet Logo

You don’t have to surrender your pet! Visit getyourpet.com to find your pet a new home. Get Your Pet is an online community that directly connects people who need to give up a pet with people who want to adopt. Pet adoption made easy!

Crossposting

Sometimes we are at maximum capacity in the shelter and don’t have room to house an animal, but we can still promote them for adoption while they remain in your home. Provided with some information about your pet and a couple of good pictures, we can use the visibility of our shelter to help you find potential homes! We utilize the same resources for this effort that we use for our in-house animals, including websites like Petfinder and Adopt-a-Pet and our many followers on social media.  This has been a successful resource for many people, and can help your pet go from one home to another without ever having to deal with the stress of entering the shelter! Please contact rrossiter@animalcaresanctuary.org for information on dog crossposting, and eblade@animalcaresanctuary.org for information on cat crossposting.

You can also list your pet yourself on www.getyourpet.com, a new website that matches people looking to re-home their animals with people looking to adopt. Check it out!

Behavioral Counseling

Are you looking to surrender because of the way your pet is acting? We may be able to help. ACS offers FREE behavioral counseling and advice for both cats and dogs, as well as training classes for dogs for a small fee.  We offer behavioral counseling on all of the following and more!

Low-Cost Clinic

Can’t afford veterinary care, but are otherwise willing to keep your pet? ACS offers spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and wellness exams at a reduced cost! We are not equipped to handle emergencies or certain medical conditions, but if providing you with the basics at a reduced cost allows you to keep your animal in your home, we are happy to help! Please email clinic@animalcaresanctuary.org for an appointment, or call 570-596-2270.

Landlord/Housing Assistance

It can be difficult to rent housing when you have pets, but if your reason for wanting to surrender your pet is that your landlord won’t allow animals, we may be able to help. We have some resources and ideas available that have proved effective in helping owners and pets stay together in housing that normally doesn’t allow animals, including providing Canine Good Citizen classes, helping to develop pet resumes, and providing assistance with security deposits. If you are interested in this program and what we can do for you, please let us know at 570-596-2200.
