A reminder that Rabies is real
Last month a young child in Florida died of rabies. There was known exposure to a bat. This case emphasizes the risk of rabies from wildlife, and it applies to our pets as well. Here are a few reminders for rabies prevention.
1 Never handle a wild animal that is known to carry rabies, no matter how friendly or normal they appear. These animals include bats, racoons, skunks, and foxes. If you are exposed to any of these animals by a scratch or bite, you should seek medical attention immediately.
2 Wounds from a bite or scratch can be small and unnoticeable. This is why it is so important to keep your pets up to date on their rabies vaccination. Even pets that are strictly indoors need to be vaccinated for rabies, as it is required by law, and bats can get into your home. If your pet roams outside unsupervised, and you notice wounds of unknown origin, you should seek medical advice from your veterinarian.
3 Have your pets spayed and neutered. This includes stray and feral cats and dogs. This will help to reduce the number of animals that have exposure to rabid animals but are unlikely to be vaccinated for rabies. According to the CDC, most dogs and cats with reported cases of rabies are unvaccinated.
Rabies is a deadly zoonotic disease. It is highly preventable. Please take the appropriate precautions. To read the article about the recent death due to rabies, go to: https://www.today.com/…/florida-boy-fighting-rabies-dies-t1…
