The “Talk To The Animals” Project

Union-Endicott Central School District and Animal Care Sanctuary Team Up for A Fun & Educational Project

Collaborating with outside organizations can enhance learning for our students. To that end, the district is partnering with the Animal Care Sanctuary (ACS) in the “Talk to the Animals” project.

At JFS, Sarah Azzarella’s class has been learning about ACS’s mission and wanted to help get animals adopted. They began their research by developing insightful questions for the ACS staff. ACS then created a Q&A video for them, while also giving a virtual tour of the facility.

Next, students created Google Slide advertisements to promote adoption, which included focusing on a specific topic that interested them. Upon completion, students presented their projects, practicing their reading skills and building confidence by sharing with their ‘fur’ friends at ACS via Zoom.

Throughout this unit, students worked with Liz Howes, JFS library media specialist, to learn more about validating websites and how to create an infographic that focuses on a specific topic.

Conducting a short research project is part of the sixth-grade curriculum. and includes using technology to produce, write and publish, gathering information from multiple digital resources and verifying credibility, and answering questions while drawing from several sources.
