Each year, we bring you a story of one of our marvelous rescues. We believe that every animal is extraordinary, so it is always a challenge to choose just one. However, this year we have one that was tailor-made for ACS’ 50th Anniversary. It is the remarkable story of a yellow lab named Tanner, a special needs dog from Tioga County.
Tanner came to ACS as a ten year old senior with severe health problems. He had been confined to a crate most of his life and was suffering from hypothyroidism, allergies and severe arthritis of the spine. He could barely stand and would fall down if he tried to walk too quickly. Tanner was missing most of his hair. He was extremely malnourished and weighed only 28 pounds! Despite his condition, Tanner had a wonderful disposition. He was happy to see anyone, except cats! If he fell down when he went for a walk, he would get right back up again and stare at his companion as if to say, “Well, what are you waiting for? Let’s go!”
Tanner spent a year at ACS regaining his health and strength and waiting for just the right person. He needed someone who could continue his medications and supplements as well as walk him daily to maintain his muscle strength. Fortunately, ACS is blessed by a number of wonderful people who have become adopters of special needs pets. Lucky Tanner was chosen by just such a person from Mansfield. As fate would have it, she lost her husband less than a week after adopting Tanner. He was able to provide comfort and companionship when she needed it most and she gave him the wonderful, caring forever home he had never known and so deserved
Then, in June, something remarkable happened. Animal Care Sanctuary was delighted to be present at the state capital when the Governor signed Libre’s Law, Act 10. After 10 years in the making, this law brings some much needed protection for our animals in PA. ACS was one of a few organizations selected to submit before and after photos and stories of animals they rescued to be used on posters at the signing. ACS’ Tanner was chosen! The Humane Society of the United States in PA has since selected Tanner as a ”poster dog”, sending his photos and story along with its news release illustrating the new law statewide. We at ACS are very proud of our courageous Tioga County boy and grateful to Tanner’s very special owner for giving him a wonderful life. Thank you Tanner for leaving your Legacy!
