Did you know that May is “Chip your pet” month? Every year over 6 million animals enter shelters in the United States. Of those animals, less than a sixth of them are ever reunited with their owners. Lack of proper identification is the number one reasons stray animals are never returned to their families.

Microchip implants are a quick and simple way to protect your pet and give yourself peace of mind. The implant itself is smaller than a grain of rice. Many people misconceive microchips as a sort of GPS tracking unit. In reality, they simply contain a specific number that can then be entered into a database to match a cat or dog to their owner’s contact information.

Microchips can be implanted by your veterinarian in less than 10 minutes. At Animal Care Sanctuary, the cost of a microchip is just $25, which then provides you with a lifetime of identification, should your beloved pet ever slip out of the house unattended.

I’d like to share with you two amazing microchip reunion stories. One is of a cat who was brought to ACS as a stray. Upon his intake exam, we discovered that he had a microchip. While the registration was no longer up to date, our director of feline care was able to do some sleuthing and his owners were found. It turns out, this cat (Jack) had been missing for 10 years! His family was so thrilled to have him back.

The second story is of a hound named Smokey. Smokey had been stolen from his owner’s property. After many months of searching, she had essentially given up on ever seeing him again. Fifteen months later, his owner received a miraculous phone call. He had been picked up by dog control in a town over 60 miles away from his home. A shelter worker had scanned him and discovered he had a microchip that they were able to use to find his owner’s phone number. She was ecstatic and crying tears of joy to find out that he was safe and coming home. Smokey is now happy once more with his mom.

These are just two examples of animals who may never have found their way home had it not been for a microchip. Call ACS today at 570-596-2270 (East Smithfield) or 570-724-3687 (Wellsboro) to get peace of mind for your pet’s wellbeing.
